A Message From Eliot's Principal
Roderick MacNeal, Jr.
I would like to welcome all families to a new year at the John Eliot School! I look forward to seeing old friends and making new friends with families who will be joining our wonderful school community this year. I am very excited regarding the new schedule with extended time, as approved by Needham voters last spring during the override. The new schedule makes it possible to add the following:
• Grades 1 and 2 will have Spanish once a week.
• Grades 3-5 will have Spanish twice a week.
• Kindergarten will receive Vocal Music instruction.
• Grades 1-5 will have Physical Education twice a week.
• Grades 1-3 will have STEAM, (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Music enrichment instruction)
The new schedule also changes arrival and dismissal times. This year, the first bell rings at 8:05 AM to let students into the building. The second bell rings at 8:20 AM to signal the
beginning of instruction. It is our expectation that all students are in their seats ready to learn at 8:20 AM. The dismissal bell rings at 2:45 PM. The following list represents instructional changes for this year:
• Mrs. Vargas, who taught 3rd grade last year, will loop with her students to 4th grade.
• Mr. Kerr, who taught 4th grade last year, will loop with his students to 5th grade.
• Mrs. Munkenbeck will be joining our 3rd grade team and Mrs. Wythe will join the 4th grade team. Both of these teachers will loop with their students next year. I would like to welcome the following new staff to Eliot:
• Mrs. Jane Borjas will be joining our staff as the Science/Engineering teacher for STEAM.
• Mrs. Catherine Buteau will be filling in for Mrs. Rapp, who is on maternity leave until February.
• Mrs. Meghan Flatley will join our staff as a part-time Guidance Counselor.
• Mrs. Delia Jodrie will be teaching Spanish.
• Mrs. Christine McAllister will be teaching Art and STEAM.
• Ms. Amy McDavitt is joining our staff as a Special Education Teaching Assistant.
• Mr. George Vallatini will be teaching Vocal Music, Chorus, and STEAM.
The first day of school for students in grades 1-5 is Wednesday, September 3.
For the first day only, students in grade 1 should report to the Performance Center. Students in grade 2 should report to the Gym. Students in grades 1 and 2 may enter through the front door.
Students in grades 3-5 should report to the Playground. Teachers will come to each area and collect their respective classes and walk them back to their classroom. There will be signs
posted on each entrance door directing students to the correct area. After the first day, all students will follow the regular arrival and dismissal procedures. Students who arrive by car should be dropped off in the car line in front of the building. Those students who walk or ride their bikes to school should enter the building through the cafeteria door. Bus students will be dropped off on the side of the building. Each entrance will be supervised by a staff member and will have 5th grade leaders present to assist.
The first day of school for kindergarten students is Thursday, September 4. Kindergarten students should report to the Performance Center.
